Golden Eagles inhabit the western part of the North America all the way from Mexico to Alaska. They are mostly concentrated in Alpine regions. They are rare or irregular visitors to the East of America, although there used to be large numbers of them in the East in old times. In other parts of the world, Golden eagles exist in Europe, Asia and North Africa.
Golden Eagles Pictures - Migration
Although Golden Eagles are migratory, most of them stay in one place or move down to lower valleys. Those birds that live north of the 55 latitude parallel in winter move to warmer areas in September. Bird watchers have noticed that Golden Eagle juveniles are more migratory than adults are.
Golden Eagles Pictures - Behavior
Golden Eagles prefer high uplands, which abound in rocks and cliffs. This is their nesting area. Usually, eagles use several nesting places throughout their lives. It is interesting, that their nests sometimes remain intact for decades and even centuries, and eagles of different generations maintain and repair them. That is one of the reasons, why they stick at one particular place for lifetime and that is what makes them so sensitive to human disturbance.
Golden Eagles are territorial. They defend their nesting areas against intruders. Interesting is the manner of attack. On spotting an enemy, eagles soar up and then come swooping down. One attack involves a series of this undulating up-and-down pattern. Hunting does not always come easy to Golden Eagles. Of all daily attempts, only 10 to 20 % of them are successful. This is particularly true of young and inexperienced eagles. Golden Eagles live in areas, which abound in ground squirrels, jackrabbits, cottontail rabbits, raccoons. They also feed on reptiles, smaller birds, prairie dogs and so forth.
Golden Eagles Pictures - Flight
Golden eagles are adept at soaring. They have a wonderful ability to maneuver with the aid of upcoming warm air masses, which send them spiraling up into the sky. When going up, they prefer to fly upwind. Despite big size, they do not have to move their wing intensively. If they need to go down, they simply tuck their wings and dive down, sometimes at a speed of 200 miles per hour. When flying, Golden Eagles produce a distinctive aircraft-like
noise. Golden Eagles Pictures - General Information Links
