Golden Eagles Pictures - Description

Along with other species of eagles, Golden Eagles (Aquila crysaetos) belong to the family Accipitridae. They are very big. They measure 27-33 inches in length. Females are larger than males. Wingspan reaches 78 inches. Golden Eagles have a distinctive gilt-brown plumage. Young eagles have white markings on the underside of the wings and at the base of the tail. Both the young and the grown-up eagles have conspicuously gilded plumage on their heads and at the napes of the neck. Golden Eagles have densely coated legs; the coating goes all the way down to the toes.

Golden Eagles Pictures - Life History

At an average, Golden Eagles live 10-15 years. However, in some cases their life span can extend to 25-30 years. Monogamy is another interesting feature of these birds. If a pair stays together, it is for the rest of their lives. Golden Eagles build their nests from sticks under the lee of an overhanging cliff or a massive tree and line them with leaves, grass and lichen to keep the eaglets warm and to ward off insects. They use this same nest for lifetime. Golden Eagle clutches average between 1-3 eggs. Eaglets appear after 35-45 days. Both parents take part in caring for the young.

Eaglets are born weak and blind. After 10 weeks, they make first attempts to explore the surroundings, and soon after, they begin to fly. After about 70 days from birth, they fledge. Several years later, they become entitled hunters, and by age of 5 years, they attain puberty. Golden Eagles are brilliant hunters. They have very keen eyesight, and possess the ability scan vast territory for prey while hovering. Golden Eagles' hunting area may reach 160 square miles.
