American Bald Eagles are brown birds with a white head and tail. Immature eagles do not have the white coloring until their fourth year. Bald eagles have powerful grasping toes, and long black talons. The hooked tip of the beak is used for tearing; the edge of the beak is very sharp. The beak and talons are made of keratin and grow continuously. They wear down when hunting and fishing. The wingspan of an eagle can reach seven and a half feet. With such large wings, Bald eagles can soar on rising columns of warm air without flapping their wings, which allows them to conserve energy.
